The Conservatory at NSB
Pre-Professional Program
Our program is designed for select individuals, ages 12 to 20, who are at a crucial point in their development. This advanced level of training allows a young artist the opportunity to mature before entering the inevitable challenges of professional careers and higher education in dance. Dancers invited to participate in the Conservatory Program will be chosen from NSB’s Trainee Division, Summer Intensive Programs, and auditions/evaluations with interested candidates.

Conservatory dancers will be involved in daily classes taught by NSB’s artistic staff, principal faculty members, and guest master teachers. They will have a total of 28* hours of instruction offered during the week Monday through Saturday. The curriculum provides a comprehensive dance education focusing primarily on classical ballet. Classes will be taught in ballet technique, pointe, partnering, variations, men’s virtuoso technique, repertoire, modern, contemporary, jazz, ballroom, tap, improvisational skills, and cross-training, including yoga and Pilates classes. It is imperative to have a healthy environment for all participants. As such, the program will work closely with faculty and staff to support the educational, emotional, and physical demands placed on young dancers during these formative years of study. Faculty and guests may also lecture during the season on injury-prevention techniques, dance history, nutrition, mental health, and guidance counseling.
The Conservatory Program requires an intense concentration and dedication to daily training and rehearsals, in addition, to support the dancer's academic schedules. The program will integrate a mentor to help with academic online studies. If dancers choose to participate in the academic study period, they will follow a daily schedule from 8:30 am-5:00 pm.
